PVT: Still Pivotal

July 26, 2010

PVT's lithe, synth-scarred new record, Church With No Magic, represents a meeting of the minds, writes Dan Rule.

“We feel more like a band now,” PVT drummer Laurence Pike tells MAG. “We just get each other a lot more. We felt the previous record was the start of something, rather than the realisation of something, in some ways.”

The last three years have been a revelation for the Sydney-based trio, formerly known as ‘Pivot’ before a legal challenge from a US band of the same name. After becoming the first Australian band to sign to legendary UK experimental label Warp Records, PVT have become darlings of the European touring circuit, spending more time abroad than at home. Suffice to say, it’s crystallised their creative process.

“When you start playing more international shows, touring more, your perspective – on what’s important and what’s not – really changes,” says Pike. “We’re doing exactly what we want.”
